About Parque Interjurisdiccional Marino Costero Patagonia Austral

Established in 2013, Parque Interjurisdiccional Marino Costero Patagonia Austral is one of Argentina’s largest marine protected areas, stretching along the southern coast of Patagonia spanning parts of Santa Cruz and Chubut provinces. The park encompasses a diverse range of coastal and oceanic habitats including fjords, channels, rocky shores, and islands within the Magellan Strait region. Its temperate cold waters support abundant marine wildlife such as southern right whales, sea lions, elephant seals, diverse seabird colonies, dolphins, and the elusive Magellanic penguin. The area is ecologically important for its role as a feeding ground and migratory corridor for several endangered marine species. The park also preserves the fragile Patagonian steppe coastline, where endemic flora and fauna thrive. The geography is marked by dramatic coastal cliffs, sheltered bays, and rugged islands offering pristine wilderness experiences. Outdoor enthusiasts can engage in kayaking, birdwatching, guided wildlife tours, and sport fishing with an emphasis on sustainable practices. The park is a vital conservation area that balances environmental protection with responsible tourism, providing interpretive centers and educational outreach programs to enhance visitor awareness of its biodiversity and cultural heritage connected to the indigenous coastal communities. Its remoteness and natural beauty make it a highly sought destination for eco-adventure travelers seeking unspoiled marine landscapes and extraordinary wildlife encounters.
